Planning for discount airfares

One of the smartest ways to make the trip fit your wallet is to plan the trip well in advance. This will allow you to get the most out of your trip and save some extra pocket money for sight seeing and other travel expenses that you may encounter upon arriving at your destination. Any money you can save on your airfare is that much more you can spend on other entertainment or travel.

Airlines offer generous discounts for early booking, and they also may offer last minute internet specials to fill unused seats. While the early booking discounts are almost certainly always offered, last minute deals are not as certain. Airlines like to know in advance that they have a seat sold and will offer cheaper seats if you book early enough.

Don't be afraid of booking your flight on the internet, where most of the good deals can be found. Internet booking also provides real time receipts and boarding passes to print. Remember, when you get to the airport, there is no difference in the service you receive whether you paid full price or got an internet bargain price.

The best discounts will come on flights that are least likely to be full. This means stay away from weekends and holidays since they are the prime money making flights for airlines. You can generally save enough by staying over to miss a weekend that it will more than pay for your extra lodging stay.

Discounts for weekends and holidays are extremely hard to find. If you have to be on a certain flight, the cheapest rates are probably going to be gained by booking the flight as early as possible (at least a month in advance). This gives you a choice of seat assignments and connecting flights in addition to low rates.

Be aware that some discount airfares come with strict terms and conditions with the discount. You may find that no trip changes are allowed, or only changes with no refunds are allowed or other restirctions on the promotion apply. Read all policies before purchasing the tickets and also look into trip cancellation insurance to protect your vacation.

Credit cards are the best method to purchase tickets online because not only are they secure and create an instant transaction with a receipt, but if your card is affiliated with a frequent flier program, the dollars you spend can be converted to miles which can eventually be redeemed for free flights.  (more on frequent flyer programs soon.
