Getting to Thailand cheaply is one thing, moving around cheaply once you get here is another thing altogether.

While taxis are very cheap (35 Baht flagfall) compared to most other countries, it is very easy to fall into the trap of taking them everywhere you go. For while 100 Baht might feel like (and indeed is) nothing, take enough taxis and it soon adds up and you find yourself having spent a lot more than you had anticipated.

You can travel extremely cheaply around Thailand by utilizing public transportation that is not necesarily aimed at the tourist sector. For example, a taxi to Hua Hin from Bangkok will cost you around 2000 Baht, however if you take a train like the locals do, you can get there for as little as 44 Baht!!

Granted it takes a little more time (about 4 hours), but you also get to experience how the locals travel and you can see many things you wouldn't see in a taxi. You can watch as the people who actually live on the train tracks remove parts of their dwellings just in time as the train approaches, and swiftly put them back seconds after you pass through.  And don't forget the skewered chicken vendors that jump on and off the trains as they stop at tiny train stations along the way.

Buses are also very economical. You can travel around Bangkok on the city buses for as little as 4 baht. Thinking of travelling to a regional area? I took an airconditioned night-bus to Roi Et which took about 7 hours, for less than the price of the 30 minute ride on the airport bus when I last travelled to my home country!
